Star of stone on its glacial lock, dominating the gorges of Guil, Fort-Queyras throws by its characteristic silhouette of the works of Vauban! Impossible to miss this emblem cherished by the Queyrassins, you pass at its feet to go up the valley!

Given this lock’s strategic position, it is likely to have been built in Roman times.
A medieval castle built by the Counts of Albon defended Queyras from bands of looters from as early as 1265. In the 16th century, the Wars of Religion and, in 1695, the assault by Savoyard troops led to many changes to the fort.
In addition to its defensive role, Fort Queyras was used as a prison for bandits and women accused of witchcraft.
At the end of the 17th century, Vauban transformed the Fort into (almost) its current form. He doubled the size of the original château and enclosed the Fort within a vast compound. The battery of blockhouses was added at the end of the 18th century.
Fort Queyras remained in the hands of the army until the late 1960s, having been decommissioned between 1940 and 1944.
Today, it can be visited every summer from May to November. It is accessed via the drawbridge, after which you can admire the medieval keep and visit the crypt, which houses a space devoted to the geology of the Queyras.
The fort was even to the taste of Philippe de Broca, as this historic site became the setting for the cloak-and-dagger film ""The Hunchback"". The feasting and fighting scenes were filmed inside the fort.
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead.
