Col Izoard

Presentation

The Izoard pass is one of the upper gates of the Queyras, transition to the Briançonnais. Inaccessible in winter, it is during the summer period, one of the most frequented tourist routes of the Hautes-Alpes.
But the pass is essentially known for its spectacular site of the Casse Déserte made up of scree from which cargneulic peaks emerge. Beyond the spectacular geological aspect of the pass, it has become a legendary place in the Tour de France cycling race. With a slope percentage of 8% on the last ten kilometers of ascent to the pass, the greatest champions forged their reputation such as Fausto Coppi and Louison Bobet. A stele has been erected in their memory.
It is also the meeting point of many other prestigious cycling races such as the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, the Tour of Italy, the Serre-Che Luc Alphand, the Embrunman (one of the hardest triathlon in the world) ...
With time, the Izoard has become a myth, don't we say "that a champion enters alone in the deserted junkyard"?
